Korea has gone through the Japanese colonial era, which led to the emergence of various independence activists. Let me introduce a significant leader of our popular movement: educator and independence activist An Chang Ho.
An Chang Ho was born in 1878. After he witnessed the Sino-Japanese War, he got the idea that the country needed to grow stronger.
In 1902, he moved to San Francisco and actively worked for Korea's independence. He created the Young Korean Academy (흥사단).
The Young Korean Academy helped An Chang Ho educate young Korean students. His ideal was to cultivate patriotic citizens with sound character. He highlighted the importance of character development.
The Young Korean Academy supported the independence movement by giving financial aid and cultivating talented individuals.
Thanks to his help and endeavors, the movement spread and helped make Korea an independent country.
When you have time, try to go to Hyehwa Station and visit the Young Korean Academy (흥사단), and imagine what our ancestors might have done to make the dream of independence come true.
