세계드론스포츠연합회(WDSF·회장 우현호)는 싱가포르의 어거스트 테크(August Tech)가 운영하는 에어로이스포츠(AeroEsport)와 드론스포츠 및 항공 e스포츠 발전을 위한 업무협약(MOU)을 체결했다고 8월 11일 밝혔다.

이번 협약은 한국을 기반으로 드론스포츠를 육성하는 WDSF와 동남아시아에서 항공기 비행 시뮬레이션 대회를 운영하는 에어로이스포츠가 상호 협력체계를 구축하기 위해 마련됐다.

WDSF는 드론 경기와 무인항공 분야의 교육·대회·선수 육성에 주력하고 있으며, 에어로이스포츠는 항공기 비행 시뮬레이션을 기반으로 한 항공 e스포츠 대회를 추진하고 있다.

두 기관은 각자의 전문성과 독립성을 유지하면서 국제적 인지도 향상과 청소년 참여 확대, 항공 분야 교육 및 진로 프로그램 개발, 국제대회와 교류사업 추진 등에 협력할 계획이다.

우현호 WDSF 회장은 “드론스포츠는 경기와 교육, 기술개발뿐만 아니라 미래 일자리 창출로 이어질 수 있는 새로운 가능성을 지니고 있다”며 “에어로이스포츠와의 협력을 통해 한국과 동남아시아의 교류를 확대하고, 청소년들이 미래 항공산업을 경험할 수 있는 기회를 넓혀 나가겠다”고 말했다.

WDSF는 오는 9월 2일부터 3일까지 부산 벡스코에서 열리는 ‘2026 항공산업 잡페어’에 참가해 드론농구 심판과 지도자 등 드론스포츠 분야의 새로운 직업과 진로를 소개한다. 이어 10월 2일부터 11일까지 충북 청주시 미래지농촌테마공원에서 개최되는 ‘청원생명축제’에서는 드론농구 체험 및 시범대회를 운영한다. 행사장을 찾은 관람객들은 드론농구를 직접 체험하고 시범경기를 관람하면서 경쟁형 무인항공 스포츠의 특징과 가능성을 접할 수 있다.

에어로이스포츠는 항공기 비행 시뮬레이션 대회인 ‘로드 투 더 챔피언십(Road to the Championship)’을 준비하고 있다. 대회는 원격 예선과 현장 경기로 구성되며 주니어, 틴에이저, 어드밴스드 부문으로 나뉘어 진행된다. 최종 진출자는 2027년 1월 8일 발표될 예정이며, 결승 진출자들은 같은 해 5월 13일 열리는 ‘에어로이스포츠 그랜드 파이널 쇼다운’에 참가한다.

에어로이스포츠와 어거스트 테크의 설립자 겸 최고경영자인 닉(Nicc)은 “우현호 회장과 WDSF는 한국에서 드론스포츠를 위한 흥미로운 플랫폼을 구축해 왔다”며, “에어로이스포츠는 항공기 비행 시뮬레이션이라는 또 다른 항공 분야를 대표한다. 이번 협력은 서로의 전문영역에 대한 존중과 더 많은 사람이 항공 분야를 쉽게 접할 수 있도록 하겠다는 공동의 목표를 바탕으로 한다”고 밝혔다.

World Drone Sports Federation and AeroEsport Sign MoU to Advance Drone Sports and Aviation Esports

Strategic partnership connects South Korea and Southeast Asia, promoting youth education, international exchange, and future aviation talent development

The World Drone Sports Federation (WDSF), led by President Woo Hyun-ho, announced on August 11 that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AeroEsport, operated by Singapore-based August Tech, to promote the development of drone sports and aviation esports.

The agreement establishes a cooperative framework between WDSF, which develops drone sports in South Korea, and AeroEsport, which organizes aircraft flight-simulation competitions in Southeast Asia.

WDSF focuses on drone competitions, education in unmanned aviation, and athlete development. AeroEsport organizes aviation esports competitions based on aircraft flight simulation.

While maintaining their respective independence and areas of expertise, the two organizations plan to cooperate in raising international awareness, expanding youth participation, developing aviation education and career programs, and promoting international competitions and exchange initiatives.

“Drone sports offer new possibilities not only in competition, education, and technological development, but also in creating future career opportunities,” said Woo Hyun-ho, President of WDSF. “Through our cooperation with AeroEsport, we hope to strengthen connections between South Korea and Southeast Asia and provide more opportunities for young people to experience the future aviation industry.”

WDSF will participate in the 2026 Aviation Industry Career Expo, scheduled to take place at BEXCO in Busan on September 2–3. The federation will introduce emerging careers in drone sports, including drone basketball referees and instructors.

From October 2–11, WDSF will also operate a drone basketball experience program and exhibition tournament during the Cheongwon Life Festival at Miraeji Agricultural Theme Park in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province.

Visitors will be able to experience drone basketball firsthand, watch exhibition matches, and learn about the characteristics and potential of competitive unmanned aviation sports.

AeroEsport is preparing an aircraft flight-simulation competition titled “Road to the Championship.” The competition will feature remote qualifying rounds followed by on-site stages and will be divided into Junior, Teenager, and Advanced divisions.

The finalists are scheduled to be announced on January 8, 2027. They will then advance to the AeroEsport Grand Final Showdown, scheduled for May 13, 2027.

“President Woo and WDSF have built an exciting platform for drone sports in South Korea,” said Nicc, Founder and CEO of AeroEsport and August Tech. “AeroEsport represents a different aviation discipline through aircraft flight simulation. Our partnership is based on mutual respect and a shared commitment to making aviation more accessible to everyone.”

The World Drone Sports Federation develops and promotes drone sports competitions and education, athlete participation, technical skills, and international cooperation.
